Cumberland River Accidents, Jones Act

About The Cumberland River

The Cumberland River originates in eastern Kentucky on the Cumberland Plateau where it flows southeast crossing into northern Tennessee, curves back into Kentucky and then discharges into the Ohio River. The river stretches approximately 688 miles in length and is considered to be one of the major waterways in the Southern United States.

While the Cumberland River primarily runs through rural land, there are a number of cities and towns along the river, including the cities of Nashville, Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee and Williamsburg, Barbourville, Eddyville and Burkesville in Kentucky. Major tributaries to the Cumberland River include the Laurel River, Rockcastle River, Red River, Little River, Poor Fork, Clover Fork, Martin’s Fork, Clear Fork, Big South Fork, Obey River, Caney Fork, Stones River and Harpeth River.

The main ports and terminals along the Cumberland River include the Eddyville Riverport in Kentucky and the Port of Nashville in Tennessee. The Port of Nashville is located in north central Tennessee and serves as an official Port of Entry for the United States. The Cherokee Marine Terminal operates a dock in the Port of Nashville which ships and receives coke, gravel, fertilizers and other dry bulk products.

Injured on the Cumberland River? A Skilled Maritime Attorney Can Help

Working as a crew member on a river boat, barge, tug boat or any other commercial vessel involves difficult and dangerous operations. The men and women who work aboard the vessels that travel up and down our nation’s rivers are at risk for injuries every day they are on the job. If a company fails to make sure a vessel or its equipment are in safe and proper working order, serious and life-changing accidents can occur.

Unfortunately, when a work-related injury takes place, maritime employees cannot always count on their employers to do the right thing. Oftentimes, employers will look out for their own interests first rather than providing the medical care and financial compensation the worker needs to recover from an accident. When you are hurt on the job, it is always best to speak with an experienced maritime injury lawyer who can explain your rights and help you take legal action to recover the full financial compensation you are entitled to.
