VESSEL ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES
Most supply boats are designed to carry a wide variety of cargos
including large amounts of fuel, drilling fluids, cement or liquid
mud in tanks beneath the deck, while providing an open deck space
for the transportation of casing, drill pipe, tubing, and other
miscellaneous cargo including crew changes as well. Supply boats
are the lifeline form most offshore oil drilling platforms, jackup
rigs, semi-submersible and other offshore structures.Crew boats
are primarily used to supply fresh crews to offshore drilling platforms,
jackup rigs, drilling ships and barge and bring other crews back
to port or to another rig or boat. Supplies are sometimes carried
onboard, but due to the smaller size and capacities, these vessels
usually are confined to transport of people.
Due to the rough seas, high wind and bad weather, the crew boats
and supply boats and their crews are often subjected to dangerous
conditions while loading and unloading cargo and transferring personnel
in personnel baskets to the decks of platforms and drilling rigs
and back to the crew and supply boats. Often the drilling companies
and operators push the crew boats and supply vessels beyond what
is safe, in order to get the job done quickly, resulting is increased
injuries and death to the passengers, crew members and workers
on other vessels and rigs. When injuries do occur, the injured
seaman is afforded legal protection under the General Maritime
Laws and specifically the Jones Act.
